The Lion King (2019) Reviews: Did Disney Fail??

By: Cierra Harper

As we all know, Disney loves to remake movies. In its latest remake, Disney takes the animated classic movie, The Lion King, and make it a “live-action” film starring Donald Glover as ‘Simba’ and Beyonce Knowles as ‘Nala.

Critics are raving about having “Pop Culture” celebs as the voice of these important characters.

A.O. Scott, a writer for The New York Times, shares his opinion on the roles of Beyonce and Donald Glover, expressing that the movie has “a lot of professionalism, but not enough heart”.

Yasmin Omar, a writer for Harper’s Baazar UK, shares her opinion about the film, describing the film as an empty ploy to get money. Omar feels as though the film “offers nothing fresh for” children in this generation.

Similar to Omar, Ian Sandwell- writer for Digital Spy, feels “once the awe at the astonishing visuals wears off, there’s nothing much else to savour”.

While some critics feel as though the remake of the original movie is lifeless, other critics believe that it is “full of adventure” and “sweetly engaging”.

Caryn James, a writer for BBC, express that the film “is funnier than the original.” Samuel Spencer, a writer for Express UK, shares light on the film visuals, claiming it to be “majestic” however, it “lacks Disney magic”.

The Lion King (2019) reviews are both good and bad. It is rated a 5.2 out of 10 stars on IMDb and 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the 1994 film holds a rating of 8.5 out of 10 stars on IMBD and a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The 2019 Lion King cost a total of 250 million dollars to create.

Globally, the movie is set to make over 450 million dollars by July 20, 2019. This movie is set to release in the USA on July 18, 2019 in select theaters and everywhere on July 19.
